Mohamed Salah was the star of the show as Egypt made history and came from behind to prevail against New Zealand in Vancouver.
Egypt made it to three other World Cup tournaments in 1934, 1990, and 2018 and had never managed to get a win, so yesterday felt good for the Pharaohs.
Salah Becomes the Oldest Scorer for Egypt
As a 34-year-old and off the back of a difficult season with Liverpool, Mo Salah is back doing what he does best, outperforming the rest. He scored the goal that put Egypt in front against New Zealand and also created a goal, which makes him the oldest African player to score and assist in a World Cup.
New Zealand head coach Darren Bazeley called the result “disappointing”, adding:
We dominated possession and created lots of chances. We came out for the second half, but we didn’t quite get to the pace of the game. Egypt upped the tempo, and we could not replicate what we did in the first half. We are still one game away from making history. We know we must beat Belgium now.
