The Newcastle club captain has informed Newcastle he wants to join Arsenal. Guimaraes has two years left on his Newcastle contract, with a year’s extension possible until 2029. Guimaraes signed for Newcastle in January 2022 from French side Lyon for £35 million. The player has been a key player in Newcastle’s revival after they were taken over by Saudi-backed owners in 2021. Guimaraes, who missed a penalty for Brazil in their loss to Norway in the last 16 match, is a crowd favourite at Newcastle and helped them lift their first trophy in 70 years.
Newcastle and Eddie Howe will not want to lose a key player like Guimaraes, as he is crucial to the club moving forward. Newcastle have already brought in a combined total of £170 million from sales already this transfer window; another big player going out the door would make it difficult for Newcastle to improve on their 12th-place finish last season.
