The Newcastle club captain has informed Newcastle he wants to join Arsenal. Guimaraes has two years left on his Newcastle contract, with a year’s extension possible until 2029. Newcastle are not interested in selling Guimaraes after losing Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon earlier in the transfer window.
Newcastle Cannot Afford to Lose Their Captain
Guimaraes signed for Newcastle in January 2022 from French side Lyon for £35 million. The player has been a key player in Newcastle’s revival after they were taken over by Saudi-backed owners in 2021. Guimaraes, who missed a penalty for Brazil in their loss to Norway in the last 16 match, is a crowd favourite at Newcastle and helped them lift their first trophy in 70 years.
Newcastle and Eddie Howe will not want to lose a key player like Guimaraes, as he is crucial to the club moving forward. Newcastle have already brought in a combined total of £170 million from sales already this transfer window; another big player going out the door would make it difficult for Newcastle to improve on their 12th-place finish last season.
