Four years ago, Lionel Messi capped his incredible career by lifting the World Cup for the first time. The story was written, and the greatest player of all time was etched in stone. And now, at aged 39, Messi has helped Argentina beat England in the semi-finals to make it back-to-back World Cup finals. On top of that, he sits as top scorer of the competition with eight goals and four assists.
Where Will The Messi Story End?
It is easy to forget that Messi retired from international football when he was 29 in 2016. He had lost the World Cup final in 2014 to Germany as well as three Copa America finals. Since changing his mind, Messi and Argentina have won two Copa America titles and a World Cup in Qatar.
Many believe winning the World Cup made him the best player of all time, surpassing Pele and Maradona. Messi also moved from Paris St Germain to the MLS and Inter Miami; it seemed like he was winding down his career. But now he will walk out in New Jersey on Sunday for the World Cup final once again.
