The Italian Football Federation has had talks with Pep Guardiola in order to convince him to become the new national team coach. Gennaro Guttuso left the position in April after failing to get the country to the World Cup. Paolo Maldini and Leonardo have made their way to Barcelona for discussions with the former Man City coach.
It Could be a Perfect Fit
There are also other candidates for the job such as Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo, but Guardiola would be their number one choice. Italy have failed to reach the last three World Cup tournaments, which is not good enough for a football-obsessed country. The Football Federation in Italy understands something needs to change, and Guardiola could be the answer.
Guardiola is a free agent after leaving Man City in the summer after 10 years at the club. He won 20 trophies during his spell at City, with a win ratio of 70.8 percent. Guardiola has mentioned in the past his desire to one day become a national team coach; the question is, is it too soon?
One thing is for sure: if Italy wants to become a force in international football again, who better than Pep Guardiola to steer the ship?
