The Club World Cup will likely expand with more Premier League teams getting involved by 2029. This is because FIFA has agreed to create a joint venture with the lobby group European Football Clubs to operate the Club World Cup. Chelsea, who won the tournament last season, took home £84 million from winning the inaugural 32-team competition. This large cash prize has got other European teams interested in entering the tournament.

By 2029, We Can Expect 48 Clubs

With the lobby group European Football Clubs coming on board, it will accelerate plans to expand the competition to 48 teams by 2029. Europe was represented by 12 clubs, with six from South America and five from the Concacaf North America confederation. Some of the world’s biggest clubs were still absent from the competition.

The champions of England, Spain, and Italy, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Napoli, did not take part. EFC wants to increase the number of European clubs in the Club World Cup to boost commercial value due to FIFA’s struggle to sell TV rights.
