It has been called one of the biggest VAR decisions there has ever been, and it went in Portugal’s favour, who go on to play Spain in the last 16. Croatia were trailing 2-1 when Man City defender Josko Gvardiol scored from close range in stoppage time. Croatia celebrated like never before, but the video assistant referee got involved and checked for offside. It was deemed to have taken a slight touch from Matanovic, so the goal would not stand.

    Modric’s Last Ever World Cup

This game had a bit of everything: a debated penalty, missed chances, Ronaldo scoring in the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time, and a controversial disallowed goal. But most importantly, the match was a World Cup farewell for legend Luka Modric. He was playing his 23rd World Cup game and has represented his beloved country over 200 times. But it ended in Toronto against Portugal, in a match that will be remembered for many years. For Ronaldo and Portugal, they go on to fight another day against Spain in the last 16.
