Julian Alvarez scored a fantastic goal and booked Argentina’s place in the semi-finals after a controversial game in Kansas City. Switzerland had defended well, but when striker Breel Embolo was given a second yellow card for simulation, Switzerland went down to 10 men and Argentina took over.
Argentina’s Hope of Back-to-Back World Cup Still Alive
Even though Argentina were favourites to win this match, they did not play well. In fact, for long periods Switzerland were the better side. Alexis MacAllister scored from a Messi corner in the 10th minute. Switzerland got back on level terms in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye from Nottingham Forest equalised.
After the sending off in the 72nd minute, Argentina looked threatening, and Alvarez scored in extra time before Lautaro Martinez scored a third in the 121st minute. Now it is on to Atlanta, where Argentina will face England in the semi-final on Wednesday. Argentina are showing they can get through even when not playing well.
Against England, they will have to raise their game because England are on a mission.
