The World Cup always offers upsets and incredible stories, and Cape Verde has created their own piece of history by reaching the last 32. A team representing a group of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean now gets to test itself against the reigning World Champions, Argentina.
The Cape Verde players huddled around their mobile phones after their goalless draw with Saudi Arabia to watch the last minutes of the Spain vs Uruguay match, a result that confirmed Cape Verde finished as Group H runners-up.
“I Feel Like I am In a Dream”
Cape Verde midfielder Deroy Duarte shared:
Honestly, it’s mad, I feel like I am in a dream. Ever since I was a kid, I have always dreamed of playing in a World Cup.
For a country with a population of only 500,000 to make it through to the last 32 in their first ever World Cup appearance is incredible. Cape Verde were excellent against Saudi Arabia, who have spent massive amounts of money on football and were favourites to win. Now, the Cape Verde players get to go against Lionel Messi and company in the next round.
