The co-hosts scored three goals and eliminated the Czech Republic, and became group winners in Mexico City last night. Mexico looked comfortable playing on home soil, and the scoreline of 3-0 certainly illustrated that. Mexico will now face one of the eight best third-placed teams in the knockout stages on July 1st in Mexico City.
Mexican Goalkeeper Ochoa Makes it to His Sixth World Cup Tournament
The loudest reception from the Azteca Stadium was when Guillermo Ochoa came on as a late substitute at 40 years of age. It was his farewell and his last ever game for Mexico. Ochoa matches Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as a player who has been at six World Cup tournaments, although he only appeared in four of them as he was an unused squad player in 2006 and 2010.
Another historic moment for Mexico was teenager Giberto Mora, who made his debut in the tournament and provided an assist for Julian Quinones. Aged 17, Mora became the sixth youngest player to start a World Cup match and the youngest in history for Mexico.
