Lionel Messi leads the race for the Golden Boot with Mbappe, Haaland and Kane chasing. Dembele, Vincius Jr and Ronaldo are also contenders. Former French striker Just Fontaine holds the record for most World Cup goals at 13 in 1958. Messi has retaken the lead when he scored his seventh goal of the competition against Cape Verde. This takes him above Mbappe on six, Haaland and Kane on five goals.

    Will More Records Be Broken?

Miroslav Klose started the tournament as the all-time record World Cup scorer with 16 goals. Messi and Mbappe have now overtaken the ex-Germany striker during this tournament. Erling Haaland has become Norway’s leading scorer this tournament, while Harry Kane beat Gary Lineker’s World Cup goals record too. There are only three players who have scored 10 or more goals during the World Cup: Just Fontaine, Gerd Muller and Sandor Kocsis.

This has already been a World Cup where records have been broken, and it seems likely more records will be written into the history books before the competition ends.
